Project

For the launch of Montblanc's Summit II smartwatch, I helped create the UX and UI for their fitness app that enhances Wear OS to deliver personalized coaching and workout recommendations. The app adapts to users' fitness levels, offering real-time advice and progress tracking to help them achieve their goals effectively. This case study outlines the design process, including research, challenges, solutions, and key deliverables.

Problem

Generic Fitness Tracking Lacking Personalization: Many fitness apps provide static workouts and generic activity tracking, failing to adapt to individual fitness levels or progress over time. Users needed a more dynamic, data-driven approach that evolved with their abilities.

Complexity of Wear OS & Sensor Integration: While Wear OS provides powerful health-tracking capabilities, leveraging its full potential required a seamless user experience. We needed to ensure smooth integration with real-time biometric data while keeping the interface intuitive and accessible.

Objectives

For my part of the project, I defined key objectives to ensure the fitness app was engaging, effective, and aligned with Montblanc’s brand values:

  • Make Fitness Fun: Move beyond basic stat tracking by delivering personalized insights and feedback that encourage consistent use.

  • Fit and Functional: Leverage Wear OS capabilities to create an intuitive, real-time coaching experience that enhances user workouts.

  • Luxury Meets Lifestyle: Ensure the app maintains Montblanc’s high-end look and feel while providing practical fitness tools for all users.

Research Data

I worked with data from UX researchers to determine how to gauge users’ fitness levels. Using Heart Rate Variability (HRV) to monitor recovery, VO2 Max estimation to measure endurance, and real-time biometric data for workout adjustments, we ensured personalized training that evolves with the user. Wear OS sensors collected and analyzed this data, making fitness tracking seamless and responsive.

Planning

A series of user flows were created that outlined how the app walks the user through the initial set up process to gather information for personalized workouts. And how the user progresses through the app once their assessment is completed.

User Personas

To give us an overview of who we were designing this for, I helped to analyze the data from Montblanc and identified three core user groups which helped us understand their motivations:

  • Busy Professionals looking for time-efficient workouts.

  • Fitness Enthusiasts seeking detailed tracking and progression insights.

  • First-Time Buyers wanting a premium wearable experience without complexity.

Solution & Key Features

Onboarding &
Fitness Assessment

The app begins by evaluating the user’s fitness level through a quick test, gathering key data to create a tailored workout plan. Based on the results, the program adapts exercises to match individual abilities and gradually increases intensity over time, ensuring steady progress without overwhelming the user.

Personalized Goals

Users set personalized goals and dive into workout sessions tailored to them. Real-time feedback from the watch’s sensors is used to keep users aligned with their training. Whether you’re just starting your fitness journey or well on your way, the fitness app will keep you on track.

Encouragements

With smart, tailored reminders designed around your unique fitness level and goals, the app keeps you on track and gently nudges you to stay active. Whether it’s a quick prompt to lace up your shoes or a suggestion to push for negative splits on your next run, the app provides actionable tips to make every workout count.

Built on Wear OS

Designed to work effortlessly within the Wear OS ecosystem, the app delivers advanced fitness tracking that takes full advantage of the Summit II’s sensors, without sacrificing ease of use. Every interaction, from navigating workouts to viewing performance metrics, was optimized for quick glances and smooth transitions, ensuring a frictionless user experience.

Impact

The final product successfully blended luxury with high-performance fitness tracking and helped users create fitness plans for their own goals. My direct contributions helped to:

  • Personalized fitness journeys made users feel more accountable since they were their own goals which resulted in higher goal completion rates.

  • Leveraged WearOS capabilities to reduce effort and cost of designing a fully custom solution.

  • Creating a brand-aligned premium experience ensured a seamless and visually refined experience, that made users feel justified in the price of the device.

Reflections &
Takeaways

This project reinforced the importance of designing for both function and emotion. By focusing on user research and a seamless UX, we created an app that not only met fitness goals but also felt effortlessly premium—perfectly aligned with Montblanc’s brand identity.
